As we all know internet is a huge place with billions of web pages all around world. Wikipedia is an open source project with hundreds of thousands volunteers from every part of the world with totally no ads and free content. Also Wikipedia is largest and most popular online encyclopedia in the world! Wikipedia was launched in the beginning of 2000's and it is among top 20 websites with the highest traffic according to Alexa. However this could not prevent Wikipedia being blocked in Turkey for almost 3 years. Recently Turkish government is well know for its human right violation, corruption and freedom of speech crisis. It all happened in June 2016 when false coup was attempted in Turkey against government. The attempt was carried out by Turkish military force and last year military academy students. According to military students, they were told that this was just an operation.
After this false coup attempt Turkish government blamed Fethullah Gulen- Writer, islamic poet, social critic. After 2 years of investigation independent EU human right foundation publicly declared, that this coup attempt was controlled to empower Turkish dictator Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is well known as an enemy of press freedom and human rights.
As of 2016 more than 250 000 people were detained among which are:
- Journalist
- Academicians
- Teachers
- Judges
- Prosecutors
- Businessmen
- Babies
Dictator Erdogan was imprisoning minorities who were against him. In 2019 Turkey's prison limits were exceeded and Turkey started building 137 new prisons with the total capacity of 80,000 people. This censorship was not only to Wikipedia but to variety of news pages and many more. There were privacy issues with Turkey tracking your messages, location, web page history and smartphone microphones an so more.
